Career Education to Become a Psychiatrist

Psychiatrist treat and cure people who have mental illnesses. A Psychiatrist will go to any extent to help the patient and cure him of his mental illness only then will the patient be able to give his full concentration on his work at hand. A Psychiatrist generally commits himself for the mental well being of the patient. Psychiatrists are licensed physicians who can prescribe medications and use techniques such as therapy to help discover the patients their problems and their solutions so to solve them. Thus begins the recovery process for the patients. There are five basic steps to becoming a certified and licensed Psychiatrist. They are given below:

1. First of all you need to complete an undergraduate program and earn a bachelor’ degree in any college or university, so as to gain entrance to medical school. There is no special requirement for premed students for psychiatry field they can opt for any subject they like, but most of them prefer biology, psychology, and chemistry as they can help further in Psychiatry.
2. After getting the valuable bachelor degree you are now eligible to go to a medical school, from here you gain the much needed experience for Psychiatry practice. You need to take courses in general anatomy, physiology and medical law. Also you will need to spend last two years in becoming familiarized with the different medical specialties in practical.
3. Then you will need to complete a rotating internship, you should be having degree namely “Doctor of Medicine” but now to get proper degree for Psychiatry, you need to complete rotating internship. Minimum one year is required to become eligible.

4. Then you need to complete a residency course and after earning your masters degree in internship, this is the training part where you will need to practice for four years or more under certified Psychiatrists. This is the main period of time when you develop your basic skills as Psychiatrist. From here you can opt for sub specialty and can add some extra years to the residency for the same, being a specialist can be beneficial in the long run. The different fields to choose from are neuropsychiatry, child and adolescent psychiatry, forensic psychiatry, addiction psychiatry, etc. Fellowships also help much in this field and finally after all the years of hard work you are ready to enter your professional life now.
5. The final step is you guessed it right, it is to get a license and be a certified Psychiatrist. It requires completion of full residency and some formalities like passing exams. These exams are the most important as they get you your license and generally are consisting of oral and written papers and some board discussions as well, if you have really studied hard all the yesteryears it will be a piece of cake for you. License for the sub specialty may be also be acquired.
