PSYCHIATRIST AND THE DRUG INDUSTRY
Psychiatric drugs, history psychiatric drugs, psychiatric treatment
Psychiatrist is a Specialist who deals with the patients who are mentally
ill. Some worry for nothing and become weak without having proper appetite
and sleep, if the illness persist he need to see a psychiatrist. The psychiatrist
examines the patient by talking with him asking him to confess what is
in his or her mind. Some get worried about their children, wife or parents,
or sometimes they have problem in their work which they keep inside the
mind and get worried. So the psychiatrist doctor talks with him and tries
to bring out what they have in their inner mind. They give some sleeping
pills and some pills to make them feel hungry. If medication does not
work then they go for other treatments like shock treatment. If they become
violent and impossible then they are kept in a room and given medicines.
The psychiatrist has to be well qualified in psychiatry. He should have
done a full course of psychiatry and some board certifying exams. After
studying so hard for so many years they enter life to earn money. Psychiatric
patients are mostly out patients, only a very few patients are treated
as inpatients. So the doctors try to get money in some other way .The
other way is by way of commission given by Drug companies for the medicine
they prescribe their patients. So they use the medicine which yields more
commission. Some new drugs are even sometimes tried on patients. The doctor
uses it without knowing its consequences.
The drug companies give parties to the psychiatrists, give presents like
pen letter pad, cutlery, and all sort of gift items available with their
drug name written on it. If a particular drug is sold in large quantity
because of a particular doctor they sponsor him to go abroad, to attend
conferences giving tickets and accommodation. It is a business tactic
done by the sales representatives to promote their product. As long as
it does no harm to the patients it is ok. If the particular drug is suitable
and gives good response to patients then the doctor continues to give
the same drug and gets benefits from it.
The psychiatrists want result from their patients so they try to give
the best medicine. Side effect is a big problem in most of the medicines.
So the doctor should see that the patient does not get any side effect
and change the drug if there is any problem. So he should have at least
three drug companies in hand to try on patients. He will get benefits
from all the three companies. As long as the medicine is safe for the
patient the company name is not a matter
